Our A netball team won the Primary B Grade championship cup recently by beating Ngatimoti 11-4. Thankyou to Celia who did a wonderful job of coaching the girls this year. Most of our players are Year 6 or 7 which means they will back again next year and hopefully they will collect more trophies!

Soccer coaching
George the soccer coach came over from Nelson this week to teach us some basic soccer skills. He made us practise dodging between players and then we played a few games that focused on ball control and looking for support players while still dribbling the ball.
We look forward to George coming again next week!

I love the Knight Life
At the end of Term 2 the senior school were invited to the Memorial Hall to watch a school production called "I Love the Knight Life" which was performed my students from Parklands School. We got to travel into town on the school bus which was exciting! The show was very good, there are lots of talented actors and actresses in Motueka!
Volleyball
Josh the volleyball coach came in this week to teach us some basic skills. We have two year 6 volleyball teams who play after school on Wednesday nights. Josh showed us how to do a forearm pass and how to volley correctly. Josh plays for the New Zealand Volleyball team (even though he has Canadian accent!) and plays in competitions all around the world.
Apple Juice Test
Dean and Riley read a story recently called 'The Apple Juice Test". We thought it would be a great idea to make our own juice using a special juicing machine so we could decide for oursleves which tasted nicer....apple and carrot juice or apple and grape juice.
Lisa helped the boys to cut up the apple and carrots into pieces and to use the juicer and the verdict was.....APPLE AND GRAPE juice tasted the best!!
Thankyou to Chrissie for the loan of her Juicing machine

Nelson Cross Country
On Monday we sent 20 Year 5 and 6 students over to Saxton Field to compete at the Nelson Cross Country champs. It was a really tough course and most people arrived home covered in mud!! Sydnee managed to win her race and Corbin also got a top 10 placing. They will now have the opportunity to compete in Hanmer at the inter-regionals in September which is fantastic!

The new admin block
Last week our new administration and office block was completed and all the new furniture was moved in. Doesn't it look great!! We went for a tour around on Monday morning, it has a lovely deck for teachers to relax on and really cool lime green chairs! It even has plasma screens on the walls (but these are NOT for teachers to watch Sky on though!)
Cooking Noodles
Riley, Bailey and Dean cooked noodles with Lisa last week and wrote a procedure of the steps they did.
They had chicken and beef flavours. They cooked them in a pot on the stove and then they ate them with chopsticks! They were hard to use and they kept spilling the noodles down the front of their clothes! But it was lots of fun...

Eva's teabag rocket
For our homework last week we had to find an experiment that we could show the class and I found a experiment called the Teabag Rocket. All you need was a teabag that could roll out into a long shape you also needed a lighter and bowl. First I had to undo the stapple and roll it out. Then you had to tip the tea leaves into the bowl and then move them to one side of the bowl. Then make the teabag stand up and then you had to roll the top of the teabag up. Then light it. It went flying up in air and it looked like a jelly fish floating in the water when it came down.

Toasted Sandwiches
Today we made tosted sandwiches in room 7! We wrote procedures while we were making them! The reason why we made them was because most of the class were at Kapa Haka. Only five people from the class made them. The five people were, Sam, Sophie, Claudia, Freya, and Dean. the Materials were - Butter, Bread, sandwich maker, Fillings of your choice, knife, plates, and cheese grater! They were DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dancing Raisins
Tanner came to our class to teach us how to do the dancing raisins experiment. We needed a bottle of soft drink and some raisins. First we tipped out half of the lemonade and then we added the raisins and we watched what happened.
The bubbles clung to the raisins and then they rose up to the surface. The carbon dioxide gas inside the bottle acted like a lifejacket. Once the raisins reached the surface, the bubbles burst and the raisin sank back down to the bottom.
It was fascinating to watch...thanks Tanner for explaining the process to us.

Macey's PJ's
Macey has been busy sewing these pyjamas at her craft class which is held after school on Fridays at the Needleworx shop. She had to choose her material then she cut out the pattern. She used a sewing machine to stitch it all together. It took her about 6 weeks to complete it. You are very clever Macey!!

A Special Visitor
This term we have been learning about the Paralympics and looking at how people with disabilities cope with everyday challenges. We invited Donna to come and speak to the senior syndicate about her disability and what its like to be in a wheelchair.
She had a tumour growing in her spine when she was 18 and she had to have it removed. Since then she has been in a wheelchair but she says shes lucky because she got to live. She lives a normal life now and has competed in the New York marathon not once but TWICE!
She uses a special hand-bike where she pedals with both hands together with her legs out on front of her. This type of bike costs approx $5000!
Donna invited one person from each class to have a go in her wheelchair. Bailey was the lucky person chosen from Rm 7. He had a bit of trouble controlling it though and nearly drove into the rubbish bin!

Disability Awareness Day
This term we have been learning about the Paralympics as well as looking at the challenges that people in wheelchairs face. Today we all had to put one arm in a sling at school and still try to do our schoolwork all day!
Mr Bensemann loaned us some slings from St Johns which was very helpful. We started off ok in the morning but by the afternoon lots of us were complaining about been tired and having a sore arm. Just as well it was only for a day, imagine what we would be like if we REALLY did have broken arms.

Palago Puzzles
Today we had a man called Jim come into our class to show us a new game called PALAGO. It is made up of 48 tiles that fit together to make different shapes and patterns. We had to work in pairs to make shapes such as a cat and a snail. This game is available from Paper Plus and Potters Patch for approx $45. We had to co-operate together, some people were better at it than others! We had fun trying to create our own unusual designs...

Awesome costume Laiana...
Farm Visit
Room 7 went to Cody's farm to have a look at how their family produce their fruit and veges and to see the new chicken hatchery. Mr Pomeroy let us have some apples and pears each and we even got to sample some watermelon. We had a great time feeding the pigs and sheep as well as playing with the chickens who were roaming around. Sapphire was brave enough to pick one of the hens up!!
You might get a fulltime job on the farm carrying pumpkins to the van!!
Cameron is checking out the prices of these apples at the stall. The Pomeroys grow all sorts of unusual fruits and veges such as scallopini and mini peppers.

Hockey Coaching
On Wednesday 10th Jackey came to teach us how to play hockey. She taught us how to dribble the ball and gave us some tips. Jakey split us into two groups and gave us numbers then called them out if your number was called you had to go and try beat the other person. Everyone enjoyed it and we hope she comes back soon.

Baby Chicks
On Wednesday morning Cody Pomeroys dad Peter came to room7 with a box of little baby chicks. He told us that they were three days old and that they got flown from Fairlie to Motueka. He said they were all female and that they were also free range. The chicks sleep in a pen about the size of room7's door with walls attached.
Above the chicks pen were two sort of heat lights that send out heat. With that the chicks can stay warm and safe.
In 8 weeks the chicks will start to lay eggs. The chicks have the sharp points of their beaks so that if a chick finds a dust bath and another chick comes along and wants to take the dust bath for herself then the chick will start pulling out the dustbathing one's feathers.
Peter also said that the pen at his house has a big chicken house and a run connected to it. The chickens will get let out of the coop and have a sort of free time roaming around the property!
