On Wednesday morning Cody Pomeroys dad Peter came to room7 with a box of little baby chicks. He told us that they were three days old and that they got flown from Fairlie to Motueka. He said they were all female and that they were also free range.The chicks sleep in a pen about the size of room7's door with walls attached.
Above the chicks pen were two sort of heat lights that send out heat. With that the chicks can stay warm and safe.
In 8 weeks the chicks will start to lay eggs. The chicks have the sharp points of their beaks so that if a chick finds a dust bath and another chick comes along and wants to take the dust bath for herself then the chick will start pulling out the dustbathing one's feathers.
Peter also said that the pen at his house has a big chicken house and a run connected to it. The chickens will get let out of the coop and have a sort of free time roaming around the property!
