Stain the Vein

Here I am pouring red food colouring in to a jar of water.

We did an experiment on STAIN the VEINS to see if it was true if you put red food colouring in a jar with water and put a lily in it in a few weeks it might just turn red or if we did it with yellow food colouring it would turn yellow.. we wanted to find out how water travels through a plant. We made predictions as to what mgiht happen and then we will write up the conclusion at the end of the week.

Randomland

Last week Room 8 invited us to Randomland. They were having an election to see who would be the Prime Minister of their country. They each had to come up with a name of a political party and they had to convince us to vote for them. Each leader did a speech. The greens said "vote for green, we won't be mean!". They also offered free money for the girls and a voucher to Hannah Montana. They offered free cars to the boys that went 350km/hr.

Here is Sam S and Sam H getting ready to vote at the polling station. There were 4 parties altogether. The Red Randoms, the Greens, Randomland First and the Fanta party. Each party offered lots of amazing things if we voted for them. One party said they would give us $1 million each if they were elected!

Here is Tyson casting his vote at the Randomland election- I wonder which party he voted for (its's a secret)

The seniors are going on Wednesday.

Snow Peas

This is Ashlie and Sam S with their snow pea plants. We all planted snow pea seeds at the beginning of the term and we took them home to grow. We were having a competition to see who could grow the tallest plant. Ashlie's plant grew 23cm, Sam S grew 33cm and Angus' grew 38cm. Angus transplanted his snow pea plant into his garden at home so he couldnt bring it to show us but he is lucky, he lives right next to the school so he could go home and measure it!

3D shapes

For maths this term we have been learning about 3D shapes. Daniel and Isaac made these cool pyramids. They decorated the "net" first then cut out the shape , folded the edges and pasted it all together.
We talked about the pyramids in Egypt and how they were built as well. Miss R has been to see the pyramids and she said they are "huge" in real life. The pyramids in Egypt were built about 3000 years ago! The Pyramids had underground tunnels in them and buried treasure. They buried their pharaohs (Egyptian rulers) in tombs inside the pyramids.

50th Jubilee

At Labour Weekend our school celebrated their 50th Jubilee. Each class did a performance on stage. The Middle School danced to music from the '70's and '80's. One group of girls danced to Material Girl by Madonna, the boys danced to Funkytown by Pseudo Echo and another group of girls danced to Girls just wanna have fun by Cyndi Lauper.

Some of the girls in Room 7 are also part of the Kapa Haka group. They also performed on stage at the Jubilee concert. Here they are singing "Haere mai" to welcome our visitors to our school.

The boys are getting "funky" on stage by doing their special worm move!! They did very well and looked great in their costumes.

Cave Trip

We went to visit the Ngarua Caves on top of Takaka Hill to conclude our Science unit on Sound.
Inside the caves it was kind of scary. The lady turned of all the lights and it was very DARK and we could not see any thing at all.
We got to hold some moa bones. They think that the moas fell down a sink hole and into the cave and then they were trapped inside. It was about 160 years ago when the cave was first discovered, some people have left their signatures on the cave walls.
Here are some of the room 7 pupils getting ready to go into the caves. A lady called Janet told us a bit about the caves before we went inside. We had to climb up a ladder to get out of the caves. When we got out it was so bright and it was hard to open up our eyes! We all had to wear these hard hats to protect our heads inside the caves as some of the stalagtites are very sharp and pointy.
We learnt that stalagtites are the ones that come down from the roof and stalagmites are the ones that form up form the bottom. It takes a stalagtite 80years to grow only 2.5cm! That is VERY slow growing.

On Friday 12th September our school held a TALENT QUEST. My group did a dance called "I believe" and we came 3rd in the group dance competition . We had to audition in the hall during the term and Mrs W-A decided which performers went through to the final. Me, Paige, Laiana and Jahmalaki are on stage dancing in this photo.

Pet Rocks

For Privilege last week we made these cute pet rocks. Miss R brought some rocks to school from her garden. First we painted them all white so that the colours would stand out better. After the first coat dried we then created our pictures. Most people drew faces, some people drew butterflies and one person created a monster!
Unfortunately we didn't have time to varnish them. Varnish helps to protect the paint and makes the colours more vibrant.
Pet rocks are so easy to make - you can easily make them at home. All you need is some paints, a paintbrush, some varnish, your imagination and of course....A ROCK!!

Colgate Smiles

This week we have been learning about how to keep our teeth healthy. Since Monday Rm 7 has been brushing their teeth every day at 1:30 PM. Everyone has their own tooth brush and toothpaste in their desk.
We got to pick our own coloured brush. We know to brush at least twice a day and to limit the amount of sugary snacks we eat. Don't forget to brush your tongue as well as your pearly whites!

Cute bunnies

On Wednesday Sam S's mum brought along some baby bunnies to school and there are 5 of them. This is Fizzy. Fizzy is sitting on Ashlie's shoulder. The others are called Bubbles, Bobo, Angel and Puddles. All of our class got to hold the baby rabbits. Sam said that she is going give them all away to people in room 7- mostly her friends at school. They were born 2 weeks ago so they need to be a bit older yet before they can be given away. They drink mainly milk but sometimes they drink a little bit of water. They sleep in a box with a some hay and sometimes they sleep in the hutch with their mum called Poppy.
They are very cute and cuddly!

Daffodil Day

On Friday 29th August it was Daffodil Day in NZ. This is when we raise money for the cancer society so that they can try and find a cure for cancer. Mrs Classen drew this picture of a giant daffodil and put it next to the office. People placed a gold coin on the picture- this is called a coin trail. For a gold coin, children received a special daffodil tattoo that they could then put on their arms or face if they wanted to. Our school raised $265 for the cancer society this year which is a fantastic effort. Thankyou to everyone who donated a gold coin!
