On your marks...GO!

We had some 3-legged races during athletics practise today. It was so much fun as you can see on the faces of the girls in the photo!
Shana and Jadine quickly worked how to run with their legs moving at the same time - they can run very fast together.

Other people found it really difficult to co-ordinate their legs with out tripping themselves up. Some people tried to just walk at first to get into a rhythm. It was a great way to learn how to work together as a team. It's also a good idea to buddy up with someone who is a similar height to you and to put your arms around each others shoulders for support. This makes it easier to balance and steady yourself.

We visited the Tyre Shop last week and asked them for an old inner tube. Miss Robinson then cut up the rubber into strips so there were plenty for everyone to have a go with today.

We will keep practising and see if we can improve a bit more!

Gala Art

As you can see in the photos below we have been busy designing our own lavalava patterns at school.
We used crayon and vivid to create these stunning pictures. The hardest part was making sure each picture was symmetrical. Colouring it all in also took a long time as we wanted out pictures to look professional so we had to make sure there were no white bits showing.
Our artwork is going to be displayed in the ART GALLERY at the gala on Friday night in Room 2.
If you see a pattern you really like, you might like to come along and buy it!!
The Gala starts at 5pm and finishes approx 8.30pm.

School Sleepover

We had a school sleepover for the children in the middle syndicate who are not in Year 5 yet. Breeze and Hannah have just finished their burgers and are looking forward to pudding (jelly, icecream and instant pud.yum!)
There were a few people in Rm 7 who couldn't come to the sleepover unfortunately but there were plenty of children in Rm 5 and 6 who could. We had approx 47 children and a few brave parents who slept in the school hall on gym mats and airbeds. There were a few snorers and a few talkers so not everyone had a good nights sleep. Lucky we had the long weekend to recover!

Miss Schneider and Mrs Latimer organised lots of cool party games for us to take part in after tea. Here Taylor is taking part in Charades. It was a great way to end the night. For supper, we had some milo and biscuits and we watched a DVD while snuggled up in our PJ's and beds.

We had a giant game of "Pass the Parcel". Corban was the lucky winner and won this Chinese Checkers game which we are sure he will put to good use on these rainy days we are having at the moment.

Aiming high

Here is Jonty and Kyle having their very first try at shotput. They were surprised at how heavy they were to lift, let alone to try and throw!
They had to work out how to keep it under their ear and "push" it rather than throw it. (Miss Robinson had to watch out for her toes as some shots went a bit wayward!!)
A great effort boys...you might give Valerie Vili a run for her money one day!

And the winner is....

Our raffle winner for Week 2 was......Robbie! His name was drawn out and he won this cool water bomb which will be useful during the summer (that's if the weather improves?)

High Jump

It is athletics season at Motueka South. Twice a week we practise our skills with the other senior and middle school classes out on the back field. Here you can see Jade doing the high jump. She is very agile and managed to clear the pole by miles! We are learning to do the "scissors technique" and to work out which side suits us best for our run up. Some people are finding it a bit tricky and others are real naturals at high jump.

Here you can see Luken doing the high jump as well. He looks very relaxed doesn't he!! Great skills Luken. Maybe next week we can put the pole up even higher for you to attempt?

Motueka River in Flood

We have had a LOT of rain in the past few weeks. Here is an aerial photo taken by a helicopter pilot yesterday. You can see how high and wide the river is at the moment The Birdhurst packsouse is to the left of the picture. They must be hoping they don't get flooded out!

Some pupils have driven over the bridge while the river has been this high, it was quite scary!

We hope the sun will shine again soon and that the forecast is for no more rain for a long time.

Tree Walkers

Today the tree walkers came to our school with Mikaela's brother Julian. He is in a wheel chair.Mikaelas brother gave Mikaela a peace ribbon ,he was happy to see her! He is a conservation person, Mikaela gave him a big hug which was very nice.The next school they went to was Parklands .

Today the tree walkers came to our school. They were meant to come yesterday but they are a bit behind schedule. My brother was with them. We didn't get to see them. But my brother insisted he was to come to our classroom. When they got inside Julian (my brother) gave me a big hug and a peace ribbon. We hadn't seen each other in almost a week!

Bad Jelly the Witch!

It is library week this week and to recognise it, Mrs Nicholls and Miss Robinson read a story to each others class. Miss Robinson dressed up as Bad Jelly the Witch.(she was missing her broomstick though!) The Room 2 children didn't know who it was coming to visit them!

Mr Latimer brought along his little digger and dug out a hole for our new long jump pit.

Jake then filled it up with fresh sawdust so it was nice and soft for us to land in!!

Tropical Fruits

Here is the pineapple that Miss Robinson is cutting up for us to taste. Yummy!!
On Tuesday the 16th Miss Robinson brought along a pineapple for us try! She cut it up into small pieces for us to snack on. IT WAS DELICIOUS! The reason Miss Robinson brought a pineapple was because we are studying Samoa, and pineapples grow in Samoa. They grow on plants, but they can't grow New Zealand because it is too cold!

This is a coconut that Miss Robinson also brought along to show us on Tuesday 16th!!Miss Robinson smashed the coconut on the concrete outside our classroom. (room7) .There wasn't much coconut juice but we ate all the coconut meat!!! Miss Robinson also brought along some grated coconut for us to try!

We watched a video last week that showed us how the Samoan people climb coconut trees. They tie a lavalava around their ankles to help them climb up and get grip against the tree trunk.

The coconuts were REALLY REALLY YUMMY!!!!

Term 4 Goals

It is hard to believe that we are into Term 4 already this year!

Mr Siaki

YUM! Here is a pineapple before it had been picked and shipped overseas.

Pineapples love hot climates and grow easily in Samoa.

Here is photo of a typical bus in Samoa. They don't have glass windows and they don't have bus stops. You just stand on the side of the road and wave them down!!

Mr Siaki came to our school to teach us more about Samoa . Mr Siaki told us that when he was little and he didn't wake up he got a smacked bottom!!! Mr Siaki use to go to school at 7am until 1:30 pm . With a spear he caught and stabbed fish and he cooked them up with an outside kitchen . Mr Siaki told us what food he liked. He liked pork, fish, coconut and taro.


He told us that there are only between 100, 000 and 200, 000 people who live in Samoa. Their favourite sport is rugby, just like us!


He has got tattoo's that took 4 days to get. His tattoo's start at his waist and end at his about his knees. The buses are really small there, they have plastic over the windows instead of glass and when it gets hot they roll up the plastic to let some air inside.


The buses are painted in bright colours.

Lucky Jade

This term we are having a "Lucky Raffle Draw" each Friday. When Miss Robinson spots someone in the class working quietly during the day or making great choices at school, she writes their names on a piece of paper and they go in the draw to win a prize. Week 1 was this cool drink bottle and Jade was the lucky winner. I wonder who will win the prize next week?

New PE shed

At school we have a new sport shed . Our class is now in charge of it. Me and Shani are going to be giving out the equipment today. Shani is going to be writing the things down while I go and grab the equipment and then give it to the people who wants its. On Friday some people from our class got all the equipment from the old sports shed and moved it to the new sports shed. We all hope that everyone respects the gear and don't leave gear lying around in the playground.

We have these cool new flying discs. they are like frisbees but much BIGGER!

(Someone threw one up on the roof this morning already)

Mr Wright in Bouganville

This is my dad, Mr Wright. In these photos he is training his troops in Bouganville. He is the only white skinned person there!! In the last photo my dad is checking if the people are wearing their uniforms properly. In the first photo my Dad is looking over Arawa where he is staying. In the second photo his troops are in a transport truck. Bouganville is in Papua New Guinea. He is gone for six months and that means he will come back in April. Dad keeps in contact with my family by email and phone calls. One day my dad rang and he said that it was 8 oclock in the morning over in Bouganville, but it was already 30 degrees celsius!!! My mum misses him heaps!!
